Comparing Dermal Fillers: The Difference Between BOTOX®, Restylane®, and Juvéderm®
- Posted on: Aug 22 2014
Every time a person smiles, laughs, frowns or squints, the muscles in their face contract. These repeated movements, coupled with the natural loss of collagen that comes with age, produce lines in the face — commonly known as wrinkles.
Those looking to diminish facial lines and restore a youthful contour to the face can benefit from injectable dermal fillers. When administered by a highly trained health care professional, dermal fillers are safe and effective. Most fillers (sometimes called “injectables”) are made from substances naturally found in the body, or synthetic substances that closely mimic natural substances or stimulate collagen production.
Fillers are made up of different ingredients, and are used to treat different parts of the face. During your consultation, Dr. Frank will determine which filler is best for you based on your individual needs and goals.
Here is a general breakdown of the different dermal fillers that Dr. Frank offers.
- BOTOX® Cosmetic: BOTOX® is one of the most popular dermal fillers on the market, and the most widely used to treat wrinkles. Made from botulinum toxin A, a muscle-relaxing agent, BOTOX is government-approved for several uses. When used to reduce wrinkles on the face, patients typically begin to see results within 24 hours. It can take up to five days for full results to be seen. In most cases, results last up to four months.
- Restylane®: Made from hyaluronic acid, a natural substance, Restylane® injections restore volume to the skin and smooth the lines between the forehead and the nasolabial fold. It can also be used to fill in lips. Since hyaluronic acid is found in the body, no pre-testing is required with Restylane. Results are seen immediately, and can last for several months.
- Juvéderm® Injectable Gel: Juvéderm® is also made from hyaluronic acid, and is used to treat moderate to severe facial lines and folds. It is the first dermal filler proven safe and effective for persons of color. With this filler, results are immediate and long-lasting. In many cases, results last up to a year.
