Is Scar Revision for Me?
- Posted on: Mar 3 2014
Following surgery or an injury, many people suffer from the appearance of scars. While scars often become less visible on their own with time, some patients may experience visibly misshapen or red scars, the sight of which can often be embarrassing. Fortunately, scar revision procedures can help restore the appearance of a patient’s skin, and help raise their confidence levels.
There are three common types of scars, which can occur in patients of any age.
- Keloids. Keloids are overgrown areas of scar tissue, which are benign, though they can often be painful. They usually appear red or pink in color, and can occur in almost any part of the body, though they most often appear on the neck, face, shoulders, or chest.
- Hypertrophic scars. These scars usually appear on the skin as red and elevated. They are also filled with excessive amounts of collagen. However, they are normally considered harmless.
- Contractures. Contractures usually occur following a large amount of tissue being lost, or following a wound occurring within a joint. This type of scarring is more severe than the other two common forms of scarring. Surgical excision is almost always necessary for these types of scars.
Surgical excision for scars will involve using a scalpel to make an incision to remove the scar. Additionally, surrounding areas of damaged tissue will be removed. A skin flap or graft is used to restore the appearance of skin within the area. Nonsurgical cosmetic treatments including laser treatments, microdermabrasion and chemical peels can also be performed to reduce the appearance of scars. Usually, multiple treatments will be required to achieve optimal results with these procedures. Unfortunately, these procedures tend to be less effective than surgical revision to improve scar appearance
The best candidates for scar revision are those patients with scars that are wide, raised, or discoloured. Currently, we are unable to make scars disappear, but a lot of research is currently being done to improve scar treatment.
