Liposuction for a Slimmer You
- Posted on: Aug 22 2015
Despite following an exercise regimen and a healthy diet, there may be fat deposits in certain areas of your body that refuse to go away. To get rid of these deposits, there is a surgical procedure that can be performed to help, known as liposuction. Wherever fat deposits may be present, be they on your hips, buttocks, thighs, arms, chin, knees, abdomen, or neck, this procedure will get rid of them. Since each patient is unique, the proper approach will be determined during an appointment before the surgery.
An Overview of Liposuction
- The procedure: The surgery begins with injection of lidocaine, which is a local anesthetic, and adrenaline. The purpose of adrenaline is to reduce the amount of bleeding and/or bruising. The solution is injected directly into the area from which fat deposit has to be removed. Based on the quantity of the fluid and the fat to be removed, the liposuction procedure may be called either super-wet or tumescent. After injecting the solution, your surgeon will create a small incision near the area to be treated to insert a tube called cannula. This tube will be used to break down and suck out the fat from the area. The length of the procedure will vary depending on the extent of fat removal needed. It may take anywhere between one hour and three hours.
- Possible complications: While not very common, sometimes there may be some complications. For example, the healing period may become very long, blood clots or fat clots may form, there may be some amount of fluid accumulation, you may suffer an adverse reaction to anesthesia, and there are also chances of contracting an infection.
- Results and recovery: For the first month, you will be advised to avoid any strenuous activity. You can, however, start working as soon as you are able. Compression garments may be needed. Results of the procedure will be visible immediately. There will be some swelling, which will subside gradually.
