What You Need to Know About Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid SurgeryEyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, rejuvenates tired-looking eyes to make them appear more youthful and refreshed. The procedure removes excess fat and skin from the upper and/or lower eyelids through several discreet incisions.

What Results Does It Achieve?
Eyelid surgery improves the appearance of puffy, sagging or tired-looking eyes. The procedure removes excess skin and fat around the eye area, creating a younger overall appearance. Blepharoplasty can also be performed for medical reasons, as with patients whose sight is hindered by drooping eyelids. The surgery lifts the eyelids, improving the patient’s field of vision.

Can It Be Combined with Other Procedures?
Blepharoplasty can be performed alongside other procedures in order to achieve each patient’s desired results. For example, a facelift or browlift may not be able to adequately improve a patient’s drooping eyelids. In these cases, a blepharoplasty can also be performed to directly address the eye area. Blepharoplasty can also be combined with BOTOX treatments in order to raise the eyebrows or reduce the appearance of wrinkles, crow’s feet and/or dark circles under the eyes.

How Long Does It Take?
Depending on the extent of the surgery and how much skin will need to be removed, the duration of the procedure lasts from 45 minutes to several hours. If blepharoplasty is performed in conjunction with other procedures, the length of the combined procedures will take more time.

How Long Is the Recovery Time?
Following a blepharoplasty, the stitches from the procedure’s fine sutures are removed after three or four days. Most patients are able to return to work and their normal activities within ten days. Due to swelling, sensitivity surrounding the eye area and the healing process, patients should avoid wearing contact lenses for two weeks following the surgery.

Am I a Good Candidate for the Procedure?
The best candidates for the blepharoplasty procedure, whether they want it for aesthetic or medical reasons, are patients who are physically healthy. Ideally, they should be non-smokers and in fairly good physical shape, without medical issues that may complicate the surgery or healing process. They should also have realistic expectations about eyelid surgery.
