Breast Augmentation

Working out after Breast Augmentation

Breast AugmentationBreast augmentation is a popular procedure that we conduct to help our patients gain the confidence they wish to feel in their physical appearance. One attribute that is shared among a good number of women who seek this procedure is a desire to stay physically fit. Breast augmentation gives them the complementary curves that top off their beauty goals. When exercise is an important aspect of a woman’s life, she may find it challenging to allow herself full recover from her surgery. “When can I work out?” is one of the most common questions we hear as we prepare for this body-enhancing procedure.

The techniques employed in the placement of breast implants is so precise and gentle that most patients feel able to return to normal activities relatively quickly. This can be good, but it can also create confusion in the area of exercise. We submit that our patients do the following:

  • Wait until the post-op follow up visit to even think about hitting the gym, or the yoga studio, or whatever form of exercise is preferred. We provide post-operative instructions for a reason, and one of the top details is to postpone exercise until cleared by Dr. Frank. Trust the timing of your return to exercise.
  • Let your body be your guide. Once you are medically cleared for your return, pay close attention to what your body has to say about your workout routine. Give a little extra rest when needed. In fact, schedule that day off when you do nothing more than take a nice relaxing walk.
  • Go easy on the upper body. Upper body exercises can stress the muscles in the chest and arms, those that have been disrupted in surgery. Resist the urge to reach for your former weight, and start your post-surgical workouts with lighter weights that are gentle on these muscles as they build up their strength.
  • Get support. In the first few days after breast augmentation, you may have relied on a few close friends or family members to help you. Now, your biggest support is a good sports bra. This is necessary regardless of the type of exercise you do, even yoga can put strain on recuperating muscles and tissues.

Important Considerations in Breast Augmentation

breast implantsAs the field of plastic surgery has evolved over the past several decades, the options women have for breast enhancement has grown significantly. No longer is the only choice saline or silicone. Today, plastic surgeons like Dr. Frank consider multiple factors, and they discuss their effect on the final outcome with patients. In addition to size, the type of implants, their placement, and the method of access are three important factors to consider.

Type

The two primary types of implants, silicone and saline, each have unique characteristics that will affect how they ultimately look, and how they feel. For this reason, patients must know what to expect before choosing one over the other. Many women today instinctively lean toward saline implants. However, new, cohesive silicone gel is an appealing option that should be discussed.

Placement

Breast implants may be positioned beneath the breast tissue, glands, and milk ducts in the subglandular placement technique. Another option is to have implants inserted between the pectoral muscles and the chest wall. The placement of implants will affect how high they sit on the chest, which affects how breasts look in proportion to the rest of the body. Although it may seem logical that implants placed above the muscle, rather than below, may sustain less stress, the opposite is actually true. Submuscular implants less often experience capsular contracture, or tightening around them.

Access

Access translates to incisions, so it an important consideration. Implants may be inserted via three routes: through a periareolar incision around the nipple, through an incision made beneath the fold of the breast, or through a transaxillary incision made through the underarm. The most predictable results tend to come from the inframammary incision made at the breast fold. However, the experience and technique of the surgeon also affects outcome. Dr. Frank’s passion for cosmetic surgery developed at an early age. This has driven him to pursue advanced education through which he can meet the needs of each patient.

How Breast Augmentation is Customized Just for You

Breast Augmentation Calgary, AB CanadaIt seems needless to say that breast augmentation is a customized procedure. While most patients recognize this fact, how implants are selected to achieve the most natural-looking results may be somewhat of a mystery. Here, we discuss the adaptable features of breast implants that enable us to address the unique aspects of every patient’s body.

  1. Of course, breast implants are not a one-size-fits-all type of product. During the consultation process, the focus is given to the extent of enlargement that is desired. Additionally, Dr. Frank uses a discerning eye to examine the range of size that will look most at home on the patient. “Sizers,” or try-on implants may be placed inside the bra to assess the overall appearance that may be achieved with various sizes. A note about size: beauty comes from proportion, not from a particular cup size. It is important to choose breast implants based on factors such as the frame, height, and weight.
  2. Not only do patients have the option of saline or silicone in their implants, but nuances vary from product to product, as well. More patients are leaning toward form-stable silicone implants to achieve the look and feel of natural breast tissue. However, saline remains a viable option for some. The material is best understood by consulting with an experienced cosmetic surgeon about your needs and preferences.
  3. Implants are no longer merely round shells filled with saline or silicone. Today, there are options that resemble a woman’s natural anatomy. The teardrop implant is tapered at the top and fuller at the bottom, whereas round implants are more balanced. Each has the potential of looking natural.
  4. Location of incisions. The incisions for breast implant insertion may be made in one of three primary locations. While incisions may be made within the armpit or around the areola, a large percentage of patients prefer to have incisions made along the inframammary fold or the lower crease of the breasts.
  5. An implant shell may be textured or smooth. It was once believed that textured implants would reduce the risk of capsular contracture, though studies have yet to confirm an unmistakable benefit. Due to the thickness of the wall of textured implants, the result may be a firmer feel to the touch.

Cosmetic treatments, whether surgical or non-surgical, should be customized to meet patient need. For personal care in a friendly environment, call (403) 245-1228.

Know the Reality of Silicone Breast Implants

Breast Augmentation Calgary, AB CanadaWomen have been obtaining breast augmentation with silicone breast implants for more than 50 years now. In that time, numerous safety studies have been conducted, and several changes to the composition of breast implants have improved patient outcomes. The number of breast augmentation procedures performed each year continues to grow; a reflection of women’s confidence in this procedure overall.

Still, there remains a bit of mystery around silicone breast implants. Namely, the question of longevity. What many women ask us during their consultation is “do silicone breast implants have to be replaced every ten years?” This is a wonderful question to ask because, if you were to believe what you read or hear, your perception might keep you from attaining the shape you have wanted for so long.

First, we want to say that there is no across-the-board recommendation for replacing breast implants every 10 years. Next, we want to look at where this idea came from.

Several years ago, a report from an FDA study was published, revealing that 1 in 5 women in this particular study needed breast implant replacement at around the 10-year mark. Replacement may have been necessary due to capsular contraction or tightening around the breast implant, or rupture, or some other problem. This is one detail in the study.

When we look further into the statistics of the replacement for silicone breast implants, we can see that 1 in 5 accounted for only 20% of patients in the FDA study. From this standpoint, we see that there was a larger percentage of women for whom no breast augmentation revision was needed after 10 years. This is not to say that study participants never needed to replace implants, but it suggests that there is a lower chance than may have been interpreted by the initial release of information.

Details to Consider

If you are considering breast augmentation with silicone breast implants, there are details that may set your mind at ease.

  • All breast implants have a warranty from the company that manufactures them. Warranties may vary based on the form of the implant, filling (saline or silicone), and other factors. Warranties are not expiration dates; they are simply a statement of responsibility from the manufacturer of a product.
  • The FDA study that led to a widespread belief regarding replacement was released in 2011, long before the development of more form-stable implants and newer insertion techniques. These advances in breast augmentation are significant, as they have improved the long-term success of treatment.
  • Breast exams are an important aspect of long-term health and wellness. This includes medical checkups and mammography at the recommended intervals.

Are You Considering Revision?

Breast-Implant Revision Surgery Calgary, CABreast augmentation has been a leading cosmetic surgery for many years. As trends have changed regarding what is deemed “beautiful,” some women have sought care to revise and further refine their shape with breast augmentation revision. This secondary procedure may be performed for some reasons, such as:

  • Rippling.
  • Changes to profile due to breastfeeding or age.
  • Desired size change.

It is no secret that breast revision surgery is an intricate matter. The procedure must account for scar tissue and the delicate nature of the implants that are in place. An experienced surgeon like Dr. Frank recognizes the nuances of revision surgery that may limit size increases or positioning. Our staff does our best to walk patients through their revision journey from start to beyond completion to ensure a satisfactory outcome.

What You Need To Know

Breast revision surgery is no less complex than breast augmentation. Having had a previous surgery does not mean that recovery will be any easier. That being said, it also will not be any worse.

Patients can expect:

  • To feel groggy from anesthesia upon waking in the recovery room. A member of the surgical staff will be in the room to welcome the waking patient.
  • Prescription pain medication will need to be taken prior to the depletion of anesthesia. This way, tenderness or discomfort is easier to manage.
  • The torso will need to be propped with pillows or wedges for optimal support. A compression garment will also be worn for several days.
  • It is beneficial to stay in Calgary rather than fly or drive hours after breast revision. Follow-up is necessary to approve travel, so we may recommend scheduling a two-week stay, or purchasing a flexible return ticket.
  • New breast implants settle into their resting position over several weeks. During this time, tingling, numbness, swelling and bruising will gradually diminish.
  • Similar to initial breast augmentation, breast revision requires a short wait prior to resuming exercise and normal work habits.

There is no reason to live with breast shape or size that you do not love. Learn more about breast revision surgery when you call (403) 245-1228.

Frequently Asked Questions about Breast Augmentation

Breast AugmentationDespite being one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures, there are still a number of misconceptions and questions surrounding breast augmentation. While you probably know that this procedure can help provide patients with larger, fuller breasts, you may not know about the recovery period, how it is performed and more. Help familiarize yourself with the breast augmentation procedure by taking a look at some of the most common patient questions we receive.

Frequently Asked Questions about Breast Augmentation

  • What does this procedure involve? Your surgeon will begin by creating an incision in each breast, which is then lifted to create space for the implant. These incisions are typically made in inconspicuous locations, helping to minimize the risk of visible scarring following the procedure. The implants are then placed and centered underneath the nipples, and the incisions are closed.
  • Am I a suitable candidate? Ideal candidates for breast augmentation are in good general health and have realistic expectations about this procedure, but are unhappy with the size or shape of their breasts. However, a consultation with your plastic surgeon is the only true way to know if this procedure is right for you.
  • How long is the recovery period? Following breast augmentation, patients can expect to experience mild soreness and swelling that will typically subside after a few weeks. Your surgeon may also ask you to wear a support bra for a week or two after the surgery. To help make the most of your recovery, follow all postoperative instructions provided by your surgeon.
  • Are the results natural-looking? While some may associate breast augmentation with overly large or unnatural-looking breasts, this is often at the request of the patient. A skilled plastic surgeon will work with you to provide natural results that enhance your breasts and improve your overall contour.

Which Breast Procedure Is Right For Me?

breast procedureBreast procedures remain some of the most common surgeries performed by plastic surgeons. Whether a patient wishes to enlarge, enhance or contour their chest, there are many options available to them, each of which can be specified to align with their individual needs and goals. If you’re considering breast surgery, but are not sure where to begin, this guide is a great place to start. A qualified, experienced plastic surgeon will help you determine which procedure is the best option for you.

Types of Breast Surgery

  • Breast Augmentation: The most common breast procedure, breast augmentation, is a popular choice among women of all ages who wish to enhance the size and/or appearance of their breasts. Breast implants can address a number of aesthetic concerns– they not only make breasts bigger, but they can balance uneven or disproportionate breasts and provide volume and fullness. Breast augmentation candidates have a variety of choices available to them, allowing for a fully customizable procedure to ensure optimal results.
  • Breast Lift: A breast lift does not change the size of the breast, but rather lifts the tissues to restore firmness and volume to breasts that sag. This procedure is popular among patients who have experienced decreased breast volume often associated with pregnancy and nursing, or those who have lost a significant amount of weight. Breast lifts can be combined with additional procedures, such as augmentation, for more dramatic results.
  • Breast Reduction: Women who experience physical discomfort due to overly large breasts can benefit greatly from a breast reduction. This procedure removes excess fat, skin and glandular tissues from the breast to create a chest more in proportion to the rest of the patient’s body.
  • Male Breast Reduction: Women are not the only ones uncomfortable with large breasts. Research indicates that more than 40 percent of men suffer from gynecomastia, or enlarged male breasts. Male breast reduction removes fat and other tissues to create a firm, smooth contour.

Breast Lift Vs. Breast Augmentation: Which Procedure Is Right For You?

breast procedureBreast procedures are among the most popular cosmetic surgeries in the world. Many women choose to undergo plastic surgery to enhance or rejuvenate their bustline for various reasons, whether it be to restore their breasts following weight loss or pregnancy, or to achieve the contour that they have always desired. To the patient, it can be confusing when deciding between breast procedures. A patient may think they need a breast augmentation to achieve their goal, when in act a breast lift would better suit them.

During the pre-op consultation, Dr. Frank and his nursing team will expertly examine each patient’s anatomy and take into consideration their cosmetic goals, then design a customized treatment plan. This post will discuss various breast surgeries to help patients become acquainted with each procedure.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation can not only increase the size of a patient’s breast, but can also restore balance and fullness. There are many implant options available to help patients achieve natural-looking, aesthetically pleasing breasts.

This procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia, and usually lasts one to two hours. Recovery time tends to be short, with many patients returning to work and other daily activities within one week following surgery.

Breast Lift

A breast lift, also known as a mastopexy, creates a more youthful contour by lifting the breasts and restoring firmness. During this procedure, the surgeon trims away excess skin and tightens the tissues of the breast. This not only creates fullness, but allows the breasts to sit higher on the chest. A mastopexy typically takes one to three hours to perform, and requires one to two weeks of downtime to allow for proper healing.

Why Choose Breast Augmentation?

Breast AugmentationThere are plenty of reasons why individuals engage in breast augmentation surgery. Even though it is one of the more common forms of cosmetic surgery, breast augmentation surgery is still an important procedure and many factors must be considered before scheduling a consultation.

There are many medical and aesthetic reasons for seeking breast augmentation surgery. Some of the more common reasons are listed below.

Breast Augmentation and Weight Gain

Breasts shift as time progresses. Weight gain can have an impact on a breast’s size, shape and placement on the body. Breast implants can provide better balance and present a more visually aesthetic appearance, years after nature and time have taken their toll.

Breast Augmentation and Weight Loss

During childbearing years, breasts often lose volume and may appear droopy. While there are no proven exercises or diets that can restore a woman’s body to the way it looked pre-childbirth, breast augmentation has been proven to be a viable option in re-shaping breasts.

Athletes and Breast Augmentation

Having a large chest can lead to back problems in more active candidates. Marathon runners, for example, complain about back pain being an issue and will often opt for breast reduction surgery. Athletes may also opt to enhance breast size, and there are many options in choosing the correct implant size that will not interfere with athletic performance.

Cancer and Breast Augmentation

After suffering through the long, oftentimes arduous journey of breast cancer, many women opt for breast reconstruction surgery. A mastectomy may be required to remove one or both breasts, resulting in a massive shift in physical appearance. By restoring a woman’s figure and creating a new shape, a patient feels a sense of normalcy in the wake of such a traumatic experience.

Undergoing a breast augmentation procedure is a serious decision. Whether a potential patient has gained or lost weight, survived cancer or is seeking to reshape themselves with more athletic contours, it is important to weigh the options and understand the reasons behind making such a decision.

Three Things To Consider Before Breast Augmentation

Breast AugmentationBreast augmentation is one of the most in-demand procedures among women today. The procedure involves the insertion of implants to make a patient’s breasts larger, correcting breasts that are uneven or “deflated-looking” following life-changing events, such as pregnancy or weight-loss. While breast augmentation has many benefits, including restoring the patient’s appearance and self-esteem, there are several things women need to keep in mind before electing to undergo surgery.

Three Things to Consider Before Breast Augmentation

  • Breast augmentation is not risk-free. Like with any surgery, breast augmentation does have its risks. Some of the most common risks include changes in nipple sensation, swelling, pain, and possible scarring. However, if the procedure is performed by an experienced surgeon, risks of the surgery are considered minimal. We use a infra-areolar incision, made underneath the nipple to conceal any scarring.
  • Breast augmentation will not make you perfect. While breast augmentation can help improve your appearance, as well as your self-esteem, it is still a surgery that requires downtime and a recovery period. The procedure cannot make you perfect, and ideal candidates for this surgery are those with a healthy self-image, who have realistic expectations about what the surgery can do for them.
  • The results of breast augmentation may not last forever. While there is no “expiration” date on breast implants, your results may not last forever.  Weight gain or loss, as well as hormonal changes due to pregnancy or menopause, may cause your breasts to sag or lose their shape. As a result, some patients may need to undergo an additional breast augmentation surgery or breast lift to restore their original results.

Before your decide to undergo any cosmetic procedure, it’s important to learn as much as you can about the surgery. Do your own research, and ask your plastic surgeon as many questions about the procedure as possible.
