Lift Your Confidence With a Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

breast lift A healthy body image and self-confidence are paramount to maintaining a content and thriving life. Some people are satisfied precisely the way they are, while others are eager to change things about themselves, like their hairstyle or weight—and there’s no wrong answer as long as it is a positive force in your life. For some folks, their journey of self-improvement leads them to seek out a breast lift (also known as a mastopexy) to achieve a variety of helpful benefits.

A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a simple surgical procedure that is performed to raise and reshape the breasts of patients who may be dissatisfied with them for reasons such as age-related sagging, post-pregnancy changes, or a side-effect of weight loss.

Breast lifts are widely sought-after because they allow patients like you to:

Improve Asymmetrically Resting Breasts

Breast asymmetry is an issue plenty of women face across the US. Breasts can develop asymmetrical naturally as they grow into their full shape. An asymmetry can also arise due to sagging, hormonal issues, injuries, and even certain diseases. With mastopexy, the breasts can be brought back into a symmetrical alignment that looks and feels good.

Feel More Comfortable and Confident in Your Body

The most important benefit that people seek when they are on the lookout for a quality breast lift is comfort and confidence. Asymmetrical and sagging breasts—or breasts that don’t conform to your ideal body shape—can create both emotional and physical discomfort. So, by correcting any issues and concerns through mastopexy, you’ll find it a lot easier to feel comfortable and confident in your body.

Expand Your Wardrobe

Though certainly not as pressing of matter as breast symmetry and comfort, those who undergo a mastectomy will likely find that they’re able to expand their wardrobe and wear the clothes they may have been too self-conscious or uncomfortable to wear before. This can further empower your regained comfort and confidence.

Bigger or Just Higher?

One of the more unfortunate parts of aging is the effect gravity has on seemingly all of our tissues. Women’s breasts don’t get a reprieve. Unfortunately, sagging in the breasts is also accentuated by pregnancy, breastfeeding, and changes in weight. What were once firm breasts that sat high on the chest are now drooping and in some cases the nipples can even be pointed downward.

When this happens, a woman wonders what happened to her former, higher breasts. The answer is that they are not gone for good, as a breast lift with Dr. Frank can return the breasts to a higher, younger profile.

Three ways for younger-looking breasts

There are three ways to surgically return the breasts to their younger-looking profile. If a woman wants only a modest elevation of her breasts and wants larger breasts, breast augmentation may be the answer. The nipples will appear higher, and the upper part of the breasts will be fuller. Plus, in augmentation, scars are virtually invisible if they are placed around the areolae.

But when a woman likes the size of her breasts, yet wants to eliminate sagging, the excess skin needs to be removed. This is a breast lift. This procedure creates more extensive scarring. Dr. Frank uses two incision methods, depending on the amount of lift needed.

  • In a lollipop method, the incision circles the areola and extends downward to the breast crease. This type of lift will elevate the breasts about 2 inches or less.
  • If a greater amount of elevation is needed, the incision will follow the lollipop method, plus will extend horizontally along the breast crease in both directions. This is called an anchor incision and it allows the largest amount of skin removal.

Combining the two

Sometimes, a woman wants to have a lift, but would also like to replace volume that has been lost due to breastfeeding and aging. Doing implants and a lift at the same time is risky, it’s something we don’t do here. It can often result in over-correction. The best plan is usually to do the implant first, let that settle for at least 6 months to a year, and then assess the need for a lift.

Recovery

Recovery from augmentation and/or a lift, will require 1-2 weeks before the person returns to work or regular activities. With augmentation, where the implants were placed beneath the chest muscle, the patient will feel as if their muscle is straining for about one week. Light exercise such as walking can resume in 1 week, but strenuous activity and lifting need to wait at least 4-6 weeks. Wearing your surgical bra and then transitioning to a support bra 24 hours a day is critical during your recovery to keep stress off of your incisions.

Interested in returning your breasts to their former, higher position? Or do you want to eliminate some sagging by adding volume through augmentation? Or do you want both? Sounds like a consultation with Dr. Frank is in order. Call us at our Calgary office, (403) 245-1228, to set up your appointment.

Questions About Breast Lifts

Breast Lift Surgery Calgary ABBreast lifts are not fully understood by most patients. Most people understand the goal is to lift the breasts, hence the name of the procedure, but details can get a little sketchy. Do they make the breasts larger? Do they make the breasts smaller? Where are the scars? Will I lose sensation?

Since Dr. Frank performs breast lifts to address flattening and sagging breasts for many Calgary patients, he’s very experienced with these procedures. Let’s get you a little more expertise by answering some questions in this first blog of the New Year.

Breast lift or breast augmentation?

The goals of these two surgeries with Dr. Frank are different. Some women assume you can simply place breast implants to overcome sagging and loose skin. While implants can reverse mild sagging, and return volume to the upper breast area that is more prone to flattening, they cannot reverse extensive sagging. That’s the job of a breast lift.

There is also some misunderstanding about breast lifts. The goal of a breast lift is to return the breasts to their former, higher position on the chest. To do this, Dr. Frank removes excess sagging skin, reshapes the breast tissue, and usually moves the areolae to compensate for the removed sagging tissue. Breast lifts do not add volume to the breasts. Because the breasts are brought back up on the chest, there is less mass at the bottom of the breasts, which can even dictate a smaller cup size in the bra.

So, lift or augmentation, which is the way to go? If you have minimal sagging and would like to add volume and shape to your breasts, augmentation is the answer. If you have flattened breasts and a fair amount of sagging, a breast lift is the answer.

Is it possible to breastfeed after a breast lift?

Here’s the thing. Patients opting to have a breast lift should have made the decision that they are not interested in having additional children. That’s because the size gain and loss of pregnancy, along with the volume loss due to breastfeeding, will negate all of the benefits you received from the breast lift in the first place. Plus, there is a good chance your weight gain will distort your incision scars.

OK, but things happen, even if they weren’t planned for. In those cases, there will likely be some disruption of your milk glands with a breast lift. This is because the nipple/areola complex is usually moved.

Does Breast Lift have to Mean Implants?

Breast LiftThe human form changes over time. For a woman, this can mean that her midsection expands as she carries her children. It can also mean that her breasts enlarge, and remain that way, for several months or years as she nurses and nurtures her growing family. From hormonal fluctuations to weight gain with or without pregnancy to the simple aspects of aging, a woman’s body goes through a lot. At some point, what is seen in the mirror feels somewhat unrecognizable to what she had enjoyed in her youth. If this resonates with you, there is immense value in implementing healthy habits to nourish your body – and in consulting with your trusted plastic surgeon to correct concerns such as drooping breasts.

Like any cosmetic procedure, it is necessary to ask many questions. One that we often hear from women considering breast lift surgery is whether or not they can obtain their desired result without breast implants. Mastopexy is focused on lifting alone, not on adding volume. So, the answer to this question is yes, it is possible to get the desired result without implants. The caveat is that it depends on the results you want to achieve.

A Closer Look at Expectations
Breast lift surgery is performed to reinstate a more youthful projection of the breasts through repositioning. If the nipples and areolas have also taken a downward turn, they can be repositioned, as well. After the mastopexy procedure, breasts sit higher on the chest. This may give the illusion of greater fullness. However, no volume is added, so the upper pole of the breasts may have a minor slope where deflation has occurred.

If the end-goal is to recover the position and “perkiness” of the breasts, then a patient may be completely satisfied with her breast lift. If the desired outcome is to add volume in order to restore or create fullness and shape, we would discuss how breast augmentation with implants may be the best way to achieve this.

Patients of Dr. Frank are provided with the personal attention they need to explore their options through in-depth discussion of expectations and recommended procedures. If you would like to know more about breast lift or breast augmentation surgery, call our Calgary office at (403) 245-1228.

Breast Lift Vs. Breast Augmentation: Which Procedure Is Right For You?

breast procedureBreast procedures are among the most popular cosmetic surgeries in the world. Many women choose to undergo plastic surgery to enhance or rejuvenate their bustline for various reasons, whether it be to restore their breasts following weight loss or pregnancy, or to achieve the contour that they have always desired. To the patient, it can be confusing when deciding between breast procedures. A patient may think they need a breast augmentation to achieve their goal, when in act a breast lift would better suit them.

During the pre-op consultation, Dr. Frank and his nursing team will expertly examine each patient’s anatomy and take into consideration their cosmetic goals, then design a customized treatment plan. This post will discuss various breast surgeries to help patients become acquainted with each procedure.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation can not only increase the size of a patient’s breast, but can also restore balance and fullness. There are many implant options available to help patients achieve natural-looking, aesthetically pleasing breasts.

This procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia, and usually lasts one to two hours. Recovery time tends to be short, with many patients returning to work and other daily activities within one week following surgery.

Breast Lift

A breast lift, also known as a mastopexy, creates a more youthful contour by lifting the breasts and restoring firmness. During this procedure, the surgeon trims away excess skin and tightens the tissues of the breast. This not only creates fullness, but allows the breasts to sit higher on the chest. A mastopexy typically takes one to three hours to perform, and requires one to two weeks of downtime to allow for proper healing.

Why Choose Breast Augmentation?

Breast AugmentationThere are plenty of reasons why individuals engage in breast augmentation surgery. Even though it is one of the more common forms of cosmetic surgery, breast augmentation surgery is still an important procedure and many factors must be considered before scheduling a consultation.

There are many medical and aesthetic reasons for seeking breast augmentation surgery. Some of the more common reasons are listed below.

Breast Augmentation and Weight Gain

Breasts shift as time progresses. Weight gain can have an impact on a breast’s size, shape and placement on the body. Breast implants can provide better balance and present a more visually aesthetic appearance, years after nature and time have taken their toll.

Breast Augmentation and Weight Loss

During childbearing years, breasts often lose volume and may appear droopy. While there are no proven exercises or diets that can restore a woman’s body to the way it looked pre-childbirth, breast augmentation has been proven to be a viable option in re-shaping breasts.

Athletes and Breast Augmentation

Having a large chest can lead to back problems in more active candidates. Marathon runners, for example, complain about back pain being an issue and will often opt for breast reduction surgery. Athletes may also opt to enhance breast size, and there are many options in choosing the correct implant size that will not interfere with athletic performance.

Cancer and Breast Augmentation

After suffering through the long, oftentimes arduous journey of breast cancer, many women opt for breast reconstruction surgery. A mastectomy may be required to remove one or both breasts, resulting in a massive shift in physical appearance. By restoring a woman’s figure and creating a new shape, a patient feels a sense of normalcy in the wake of such a traumatic experience.

Undergoing a breast augmentation procedure is a serious decision. Whether a potential patient has gained or lost weight, survived cancer or is seeking to reshape themselves with more athletic contours, it is important to weigh the options and understand the reasons behind making such a decision.

Explore The Benefits of A Breast Lift

breast liftOver time, a woman’s breasts can become droopy or saggy due to factors like pregnancy, breastfeeding, aging, weight fluctuation or simply gravity. This change can be a source of discomfort and insecurity for some women who long for the firm, youthful breasts they used to enjoy.

A breast lift, or mastopexy, offers a solution to sagging breasts. This procedure raises the breasts by trimming excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissues to support the new breast contour.

The mastopexy procedure produces a number of benefits, some of which include:

  1. Rejuvenated, firmer breasts. Breasts are lifted to a higher position on the chest, and drooping skin is removed. What remains is smooth and firm.
  2. A more youthful contour. A breast lift helps to restore a more youthful appearance to the overall body.
  3. Smaller areolas. In some cases, the skin of the areola (dark circle of skin surrounding the nipple) can become stretched out, causing them to sag or become disproportionately enlarged. During a breast lift, Dr. Frank can trim excess skin from the area and reshape the areola. This is performed at the discretion of the patient and the surgeon’s recommendations.

The 5 Top Plastic Surgeries of Today

plastic surgeryCosmetic Surgery is an extremely personal decision for any patient, and one which should be discussed thoroughly with your surgeon beforehand. Patients are always concerned about looking natural, and experiencing a comfortable procedure.

Cosmetic surgery is customizable and can be done to suit a patient’s specific needs and desires. The list below covers some of the most popular cosmetic procedures of today.

Top 5 Plastic Surgeries of Today:

  1. Breast lift. Over time, many women will experience loose, sagging breasts, which can be uncomfortable and embarrassing. A breast lift will give women “perkier” breasts! Breasts will look very natural, and feel firmer.
  2. Cosmetic eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty). Cosmetic eyelid surgery corrects the look of  puffy, tired-looking eyes, by removing excess fat, skin, and muscle from either the upper or lower eyelids. This can be done for cosmetic purposes, but also to keep droopy eyelids from hindering one’s vision! On occasion, cosmetic eyelid surgery is combined with BOTOX® Cosmetic to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and under eye circles.
  3. Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck.) An abdominoplasty flattens, and shapes the patient’s abdomen and waist, removing excess skin and fat. Muscles also become tighter during this procedure! Many women request this procedure following life-changing events, such as pregnancy, which can stretch out the muscles around the abdomen.
  4. Breast augmentation. Breast augmentations remain extremely in-demand among women who wish to enhance the size of small, or uneven breasts. Women may choose their procedure for aesthetic reasons, as well as for medical reasons, since uneven breasts can often be uncomfortable. Augmentation surgery may be performed on its own, or in combination with breast lift surgery. Breast implants are cohesive gel implants, which are placed behind each breast, to give the patient the look they’ve always wanted.
  5. Liposuction. Liposuction remains in-demand among patients who want to enhance the overall body shape. This procedure sculpts the shape of a patient’s body, removing stubborn fat from targeted areas of the body, such as the thighs, abdomen, waist, neck, hips and buttocks. Patients love the slimmer appearance this procedure gives them!

What is a Breast Mastopexy?

Breast Mastopexy?Over time, women experience significant changes in both their body and their breasts. These changes can be caused by life-changing factors, such as aging, changes in weight, pregnancy, and menopause. These life events can often lead to saggy-looking breasts that look unflattering, and make a woman feel uncomfortable about her appearance.

Women who are experiencing these changes in their body may benefit from breast mastopexy (“breast lift.”) Let’s take a look at some commonly-asked questions about this procedure.

  1. What exactly does breast lift surgery involve? Breast lift surgery is firms and lifts the appearance of breasts, with the removal of excess skin in the area that causes the breast to look saggy or unflattering. The remaining skin is tightened, which restores and reshapes breasts. As a result, the patient has a more flattering appearance.
  2. Will the size of my breasts change as a result of this surgery? No, the breasts will not be altered in size during this procedure. Breast lift surgery does not provide the same benefits as breast augmentation. Breast lifts are performed to restore a more flattering shape to a woman’s breasts.
  3. What will this surgery involve? Breast lift surgery is usually performed in a hospital or surgical center, as an outpatient procedure. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia, and normally lasts for about 1 to 3 hours. Incisions will need to be made in order to remove excess fat and reposition the breasts. Results are immediately noticeable. Most patients return to normal activities a week or so after undergoing the surgery.
  4. Is breast lift surgery the right choice for me? Ideal candidates for breast lift surgery are healthy individuals who do not smoke and maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle. Doctors also recommend that candidates seek breast lift surgery to improve their own self-image, and not seek surgery to please someone else.
  5. Are there risks associated with breast lift surgery? Risks of the breast lift procedure include persistent pain, infection, and scarring. Fortunately, most patients who undergo this procedure only experience temporary side-effects, and are able to heal well following surgery.
